Toe Nail Art: Where to Start?

03/18/2014 By Nails

If you love nail art, why restrict it to just your fingernails? Come Spring and you want to enjoy the respite from the chilly winters by flaunting pretty open toed sandals and peep-toe shoes. And what could be more stylish than toe nail art?

Toe nail art is the new buzz, with lots of options and opportunities to showcase your creativity. Based on what nail art style you pick, you can either make an elegant and chic style statement, or go for the cute, summery look by simply playing with nail colors, textures and glitter. And while nail artists can literally convert your toe nails in to masterpieces, it isn’t all that hard to decorate your toe nails by yourself. Thanks to the endless designs and styles you can now flaunt, nail art for the toes is very achievable even at home!

Toe Nail Art: The Basics

Today, adorning the feet is almost as classy as adorning your hands. The styles of footwear you can parade in are endless and become a crucial part of your overall outfit, and hence, nail art on the toes makes an even bigger impact.

Toe nail art can look very stylish and creative, and the process is as easy as finger nail art. Mastering the techniques is very simple, just as long as you have a good quality nail paint, probably some nail pens if required, and a steady hand with careful brush strokes to create your own masterpiece. But before you begin, here are some basics to understand:

  • There are no hard and fast rules to perfect nail art and the same holds true for toenails. You can come up with a plethora of designs: multicolored nails, prints and patterns, nail stickers, using glitter, or even do something as simple as contrasting colors on alternate nails for a dramatic look. The only thing you need to keep in mind is that there has to be a theme behind the design for people to notice and appreciate your creative efforts.
  • Toe nails are more prone to wear and tear, especially if you wear closed, fitted shoes for most of the day. In such a case, you should steer clear of stickers or elaborate patterns and textures, and even rhinestones. Stick to basics: playing with just color, and always add a protective final coat of clear nail paint to ensure that your nail art  doesn’t chip easily.
  • For your nail art to truly stand out, you will need to make sure that your feet always look tidy and pretty. Get regular pedicures so that your feet are the perfect canvas for the nail art to shine through, and wear appropriate footwear to exhibit the design.

Simple DIY Ideas for Stunning Toe Nail Art

If you are ready to paint your toe nails into pretty and exciting designs, here are some ideas to inspire you:

Two Tone Designs

These are perfect for beginners as this technique is simple to master as well as maintain. Choose two colors of your choice; it could be contrasting shades or even shades closer on the color wheel for a color-blocking effect. Use both shades on the big toe;  paint two diagonally divided areas in two different colors, paint half and half for top and bottom or for left and right, alternatively create a half moon at the bottom in one of the colors, or paint stripes in alternate colors. Next, paint alternate toes in each shade to complete your artwork.

Polka Dot Designs

Another very simple technique, polka dots are trendy and look very cute and summery. Choose a lighter base shade like white, cream, light pink or baby blue. Then create simple dots using just the tip of the brush in a darker shade which should ideally be a contrasting color for maximum impact. If you are not confident working with the brush for the dots, you can also use a toothpick or any other dotting tool.

Accent Big Toe

Since your big toe has the largest surface area for artwork, you can create stunning toe nail art by turning it into your art canvas. Choose a base color and paint all toes with that. Once dried, you can make the big toe the accent nail and get creative. Create free hand patterns on both big toes using nail art pens. You can also use nail stickers and get modern abstract designs, floral designs or even funky characters.

Glittery Delight

Glitter is one of the easiest ways to add texture, pattern and sheen to your cute nails. A popular trend is to use star shaped glitter over a base coat. This could be done on just the big toe for accentuation or on all toes if you can find small sized star glitter paint. Apart from stars, you can also use glitter in varying styles and shapes, geometric patterns, organic patterns and also plain old simple multi-colored glitter dots.

All Over Pattern

For those who love animal prints, here is a chance to wear your favorite trend on your toenails as well! A very stylish way to decorate your toe nails is to create a base coat for all nails and then use nail art pens to fashion leopard pattern, zebra pattern, tiger print, and even hound’s tooth pattern.

Toe nail art is easy yet effective, the perfect way to decorate your toes and make them an expression of your personality. And since you can try a new design every week, you have many versatile ways to accentuate your feet! Just ensure that you let the paint dry completely and always add one to two coats of top protective paint of clear varnish so that your artwork doesn’t chip easily, and gets you noticed everywhere you go!
